Experience with Learning Theories

Top 10 Instructional Design Theories For Your Next eLearning Course

Hi everyone, I'm Ryan. Great to meet you!

With a background as a project manager in an education technology agency, I have been immersed in the world of multimedia resource creation and instructional design theories in corporate and management training. However, I do recognize that there is a vast landscape of learning theories and instructional frameworks that I have yet to fully explore and integrate into my work.

In my role, I have often incorporated elements of the ADDIE model and gamification principles into my designs, aiming to create engaging and effective learning experiences for our clients. Recently, I have been involved in a project targeted at community college students who are undecided about their majors.

3 Considerations When Considering a College Major | Fastweb

This project seeks to reinvent the traditional college major aptitude test by offering immersive simulation-based scenarios that provide students with hands-on exposure to various fields, through the use of various technologies, helping them gain insight and make informed decisions about their academic paths.

As I reflect on my existing knowledge and experiences, I am particularly intrigued by theories such as Constructivism, which emphasizes active learning and knowledge construction, and Keller’s ARCs Model of Motivation, which focuses on creating meaningful learning experiences through attention, relevance, and satisfaction. While I believe I do employ these theories and principles into my work currently, I see dramatic potential in incorporating more of these theories into our projects to enhance learner engagement and motivation.

Through this course, I hope to delve deeper into these theories and frameworks, gaining a more comprehensive understanding of their principles and practical applications. I aspire to broaden my skillset, exploring new methodologies and approaches that can further elevate the quality and impact of my learning designs. By engaging in discussions, collaborating with others in the course, and reflecting on real-world experiences, I expect that this course will not only enhance my professional development but also inspire innovative solutions to the challenges faced in instructional design and learning design theory.

I am excited to explore the opportunities for growth and learning that lie ahead, eager to evolve as a learning designer and be able to soon apply newfound knowledge into my work and contribute meaningfully to the field of educational technology.

  1. Hi Ryan! Thank you for sharing your prior knowledge and experience. I think a scenario and hands-on based test is a great solution for college students to get a clearer image of what they might want to do with their degree in the future. Often times I find that college students think they want to get into a certain field but when they are faced with the realities of that career, they are less interested in that field.

I agree that Keller's ARCS Model of Motivation is a framework that has huge potential in Learning Design projects and more. What I love about a career, such as a Learning Experience Designer is that there is always something to learn and incorporate for new and innovate solutions. I am interested to see which theory (or theories) you end up implementing in your work in the future!
